Meta Platforms has announced a major update to its security tools for its messaging services (WhatsApp and Messenger) to better protect users from the rising wave of digital scams.
According to Meta, since early 2025, its teams have compromised nearly 8 million accounts linked to global scam centers operating in regions such as Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, the United Arab Emirates, and the Philippines.
Meta's update covers multiple fronts: technical security measures, user training, account security improvements, and regional awareness campaigns. Some of the key tools include:
WhatsApp screen sharing alert
Messenger AI scam detection
Passcodes and biometric login support
Account and privacy review
Public awareness and regional literacy activities
Key challenges will include:
Ensuring consistent implementation globally
Keeping pace with scammers' innovation
Balancing privacy and security
Measuring effectiveness over time
Meta's latest tools underscore a broader commitment to advocating for users—not just through policies or moderation, but also through built-in product features, collaborations, and training.
For users (and especially older adults), the message is clear: stay vigilant, use built-in protections, and treat unsolicited communications with caution.
